South-eastern MP Rachel Payne says she is hugely relieved that the state and federal governments have committed $12.6 million to improve safety at the dangerous Stud and Mcfees Roads intersection.

“In all, six people lost their lives on Stud Road in the last 10 years,” Ms Payne said.

“The speed limit was lowered on parts of Stud Road after the tragic death of a child in an accident in 2024, but I have been calling in state parliament for more to be done to make that road safe.”

Funding for new traffic lights and safer pedestrian crossings at the intersection of Stud and Mcfees Roads was announced on May 26.

“Locals trying to get to the Dandenong Stadium, who play basketball and volleyball there, need to cross at that busy intersection,” Ms Payne said.

“I am thankful that a costed and shovel-ready council project for a pedestrian crossing near the Dandenong Stadium will go ahead, but of course I wish it had happened sooner.

“For a long time, this project was ready to roll. The state and federal governments should have funded it sooner, instead, the community has endured multiple tragedies, which sadly proved the catalyst for government action.

“The people of Dandenong must be able to feel safe on local roads, especially on a key road leading to a major community hub – the stadium.

“A new footpath will be built at the intersection to the Dandenong Stadium, as well as the right-turning lane from Stud Road into Mcfees will be extended. Access between Mcfees Road and the Stud Road service roads will be closed to cut the risk of accidents.

“Not only do nearby residents use the stadium, but there are three busy bus stops on Stud Road – these will be upgraded.

“The two eastern side Stud Road bus stops will be combined and moved closer to Mcfees Road, along with the bus stop on the western side.

“A raised pedestrian crossing will be built to connect the new bus stop with the Stud Road service road.”
