Rachel asked the Minister for Roads and Road Safety if this government will commit to implementing safety measures at a dangerous Rowville intersection.

Victorian Legislative Council
RACHEL PAYNE (South-Eastern Metropolitan) – To ask the Minister for the Suburban Rail Loop (for the Minister for Roads and Road Safety):
My constituency question is for the Minister for Roads and Road Safety. My constituent is a resident of Rowville.
In January 2024 a road fatality devastated his community. In the aftermath my constituent joined other residents in calling for safety measures at the intersection of Wellington Road and Braeburn Parade in Rowville. Father of two Yunesh Naidu lost his life when a truck ran a red light at this intersection.
Tragically, Mr Naidu is not the first to suffer this fate at this intersection. Locals know this area is dangerous and have spent years pleading for change, yet this government continues to ignore community concerns.
So my constituent asks: will the minister commit to implementing speed and red-light cameras at this notorious intersection?
Road safety in Rowville – Response received 19th of February 2025:
I thank the Member for South-Eastern Metropolitan Region for her question.
I was saddened to learn of the death of a motorist at this intersection, and I appreciate that this recent incident would be distressing for the local community. I offer my deepest condolences to all those affected by this incident, especially the family of the motorist.
The Department of Transport and Planning (DTP) regularly receives suggestions for changes across the state’s transport network. These are considered based on various factors, including the extent to which a solution would improve safety or congestion, the number of road users travelling along the road, the need to cater for vulnerable road users, historical safety records, the impact that treating the road would have on the performance of the surrounding road network, and implementation costs.
In this context, DTP has completed a review of the speed limit along Wellington Road and is planning to reduce the speed limit from 80 km/h to 70 km/h in Rowville. The extent and timing of the speed limit reduction is yet to be determined and will be considered in a future program.
You may also be aware that several years ago DTP installed safety barriers along many sections of Wellington Road to help prevent errant vehicles from colliding into fixed roadside objects such as mature trees and utility poles and also into oncoming vehicles.
Finally, the Department of Justice and Community Safety (DJCS) is responsible for the location selection and management of all road safety cameras in Victoria. You or your constituents may wish to submit a suggestion to DJCS via the “Cameras Save Lives” website, where further information about the camera location selection process can also be found.
